We start gently with an easy leg to get used to our bikes and the Indian way of the road. What a treat is in store for you today! Your destination leads to the famed backwater town of Kumarakom. The ride through the plains passes through settlements of rubber plantations, farmlands, fruit yards, and market places. Overnight stay in the backwaters.
Leaving for Kumily early after breakfast we will be covering approx. 93 miles with the guide and backup vehicle. On the way to Kumily, you pass a beautiful hamlet called ‘Cherukunnam’. This little village is interspersed with canals in all directions. We travel along with one of these canal bund roads amid lush green paddy fields filled with coconut trees and villages. We visit the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and the Bhoothathankettu dam in Thekkady. Stay two nights in Kumily.
We wake up early to enjoy a boat ride in the National Park. Periyar Tiger Reserve keeps the magnificence of flora, fauna and wildlife lively. After breakfast visit a Spice Plantation and learn about the different spice grown here and their use in medicine and cooking. On our way back we visit the spice market and if you wish to buy some for your personal use this is the best place. Evening visit a local family for a cooking class followed by home-cooked dinner.
We take a windy road to Munnar. We find ourselves on the highest mountain in south India, which stands at an impressive 2,700 m altitude (Anamudi, Kannan Devan hills). The seemingly gentle ride takes the riders through pristine tea estates, cool breeze and breath-taking views. For riders, Munnar offer some of the finest and thrilling trails as it winds its way through the shola forests, cardamom estates and tea gardens. You get to see the countryside, the indigenous tribal and the tea estate workers who work these tea gardens. Stay two nights in Munnar.
We enjoy many more mountain roads with views over spectacular bodies of water. We briefly drop back down to the warm Tamil plains, only to climb back up to the Kodaikanal region, with the welcome fresh mountain air of the Palani hills. An English hill town, popular for its large cedar and eucalyptus forests. Stay overnight in Kodaikanal.
Heading north back down the Palani hills we enjoy some wonderful views, especially overlooking Palar dam. We pass through Palani, a small holy town, where scenes of religious fervour are commonplace. We take another series of beautiful mountainous roads, passing remote villages on our way as we push on through the Tamil Nadu plains north of the mountain range surrounded by lush, peaceful countryside. Stay overnight Palakkad.
We continue our adventure through farmlands and skirt around Elivai Malai. Dense forests and tea plantations surround us once more as we climb towards Ooty, another ancient hill station much-loved by the English, set at the foot of the Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiri range (2,637 m). We make a crazily steep ascent on a series of 35 hairpin bends over only 12 miles. Stay two nights Ooty.
Today you will visit tea gardens and various scenic spots. Experience the most enchanting Toy Train ride from Coonoor to Ooty. The ride continues to inspire weaving its way through rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations, and thickly forested hills. The picturesque Nilgiri Mountains and the journey is worth the time spending in the train. Enjoy the mountains and the beautiful scenery that whisks pass you in the train.
We head towards the coast and Guruvayur, a spiritual Hindu town, which abounds with religious paraphernalia shops and thousands of Hindu pilgrims visiting each day. Lunch in the area, then we take the coastal road to Vypin Island and its numerous beaches that have only just gained popularity among tourists.
