International Flights

The tour packages are usually “Land Only” and do not include international flights.  We, therefore, recommend that you contact us or your travel agent to book your flights well in advance of travel when you can generally gain access to specials and discounted airfares. This will ensure you can travel on the days that suit you and your tour.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our journeys. Speak to us or your travel agent about comprehensive insurance to cover your travel arrangements. This must critically cover medical expenses in case of an emergency.  Note that travel insurance automatically provided with credit cards generally does not provide adequate cover. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have appropriate and comprehensive travel insurance.

Medical Information

Our elderly travellers who are aged 70 years or more, or with a pre-existing condition that affects their fitness to travel or any medical dietary requirement, must be advised at the time of booking. We recommend all travellers should visit their Doctor for these aforementioned purposes and/or to confirm that they are physically able to undertake the day-to-day requirements of the tour.

Selecting Your Holiday Type

Most of our journeys are suited to those with normal fitness and mobility levels. To assist you in choosing a journey best for you we have graded our tours;

Easy Paced: These programs are set at a comfortable pace. Walking and climbing of stairs involved are generally in and around major tourist attractions though you may require walking from road till boat jetty while embarking or disembarking boats.

Moderate: These tours are not strenuous but you will require good amount of fitness as they may include days with long periods of walking or soft trekking, climbing of stairs, embarking and disembarking boats and where longer distances may be travelled by uneven roads.

Adventurous: These refer to programs where your physical fitness needs to be at the highest level. Trekking, cycling, climbing, walking and more adventurous activities may be included.

Getting Around

Comfort is our first priority. All our coaches are air-conditioned with push back seats. We even offer 30-35 seater coach when only 16 people are in a group, providing everyone with a window seat. Our train journeys in air-conditioning sleeper class where bedding is provided by the train attendant and itineraries that include a domestic flight to connect destination we use economy class.

Passport & Visas

India: Visa is required for all foreign nationals and you must obtain an Indian visa prior to leaving home as visa processing varies from country to country. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel in India. Travel to Sikkim requires a special permit; the application may be made when applying for a standard Indian visa at the local Indian High Commission.

As of 25 Sep 2013 nationals and passport holder of New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Finland, Luxem Bourg, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar can avail visa-on-arrival (VoA) facility upon disembarking at international airports Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Trivandrum only. You will require to pay the fee along with requiring documentation and is subject to verification and satisfaction of the Immigration. Please contact the high commission of India for updated information.

Sri Lanka: Every tourist visiting Sri Lanka requires a visa prior to departure. Visa must be obtained at least 01 months prior to arrival in Sri Lanka by visiting The Tourist visa is valid for stay within 30 days. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel to Sri Lanka. A fee will apply.

Nepal: Visa is required for all foreign nationalities and the best way to apply for a visa is from the Royal Nepalese diplomatic missions in your home country. Tourist Visa also can be obtained on arrival. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel in Nepal. A fee will apply.

Bhutan: All foreign nationals require a visa for Bhutan.

Visa can be arranged by TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS. To process this we require clear readable colour copy of passport (page containing passport no and face picture in JPEG or PDF format) and current colour passport photograph and at least 30 days prior to the date of entry into Bhutan. Remaining validity of the passport should be at least 6 months from the date of exit from Bhutan.

Tourism Council of Bhutan issues visa clearance letter closer to travelling date which we email or fax you or your local travel agent. Travellers are required to produce aforesaid visa clearance copy at the time of check-in for their flights while those entering Bhutan by surface via Phuentsholing or Samdrup Jonkhar, they are required to produce this Visa Clearance letter at the Immigration counter. Actual visa is stamped at passport on arrival in Bhutan.

Visa only service is not offered in Bhutan, you would have to book a service tour package from TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS that includes accommodation, guided tours, transfers etc

Day 1: Arrive Colombo (Flight TBA)

Arrive at Colombo International Airport. Please clear immigration & visa formalities, collect your baggage and proceed to the arrival lounge through the green channel if you do not have goods to be declared to customs. TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS Executive will page you by your name. Thereafter you will be assisted with a transfer to the hotel, check-in at the hotel and stay overnight in Negombo.

Day 2: Colombo - Dambulla/Habarana

Today after your breakfast continue your trip to Dambulla/Habarana the hub of the cultural triangle. Stop en-route in Yapahuwa to explore the remains of one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capital cities. The citadel of Yapahuwa was built around a huge granite rock rising abruptly almost a hundred meters above the surrounding lowlands. It was a palace and military stronghold against foreign invaders.  Enjoy the Catamaran ride on Lake Habarana along with a local fisherman. Stay for three nights (B, D)

Day 3: Anuradhapura Excursion

After breakfast, proceed for an excursion to Anuradhapura. – a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the north-central part of the Island was the first capital (5th century BC - 9th century AD), the centre of the island's Buddhist civilization and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka.  In antiquity and the interest, it is the equal of any ancient 'buried city' in the world. The oldest historically documented tree on earth (over 2,200 years old) - The Sri Maha Bodhi, brought as a sampling of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and the island's oldest Buddhist shrines - some dating back to the 3rd century BC, impressive white 'dagabas' (relic chambers) and monuments embellished with handsome stone carvings or sculpture, pleasure gardens, beautifully executed stone baths and ponds and a superb irrigation system of reservoirs and canals are the main attractions of Anuradhapura. Day 4: Polonnaruwa & Wildlife

After breakfast, enjoy your excursion to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, which remains one of the best planned archaeological relic sites in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom's first rulers. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. In the afternoon enjoy your jeep safari to witness a herd of wild elephants and various other wildlife species in Minneriya National Park. (B, D)

Day 5: Dambulla / Habarana - Kandy

After breakfast travel to Kandy, en-route visiting the very impressive 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress. This world heritage site, consists of the remains of a palace on the top of the rock, a mid-level terrace that includes the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens', the lower palace on the slopes below the rock, and the moats, walls and water gardens that extend for some hundreds of metres out from the base. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple - vast isolated rock mass 500 feet high and a mile around the base. Here is found the famous Rock Temple dating to the First Century B.C. The caves of Dambulla sheltered King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne he built the most magnificent of Rock Temples to be found in the Island. Also Spice garden in Matale.  (B, D)

Day 6: Kandy

Today, your guide will take you on a tour to explore Kandy at your own leisure. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site. You will visit the Temple of the Tooth relic, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Gem Museum and in the evening, witness a traditional Kandyan dance accompanied by live music. (B, D)

Day 7: Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast leave for Nuwara Eliya via visiting Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya -147 acres in extent; Started in 1374 as a pleasure garden of the Kings of Gampola and Kandy.  There are more than 5,000 species of trees, plants and creepers. Some rare and endemic as well as flora from the tropical world are found in the gardens. Spice Garden and Orchid House are popular with tourists. Thereafter leave for Nuwara Eliya, The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the island, but it is really just like an English spring day, although the temperature does drop at night. All around Nuwara Eliya you will see evidence of the British influence. Houses are like country cottages or Queen Ann style mansions.  Visit a Tea Plantation and factory to witness the complete process of turning the raw green leaf into the finished product. (B, D)

Day 08: Tea Tour & High Tea 

Morning visit a Tea Plantation and Factory to observe the process of turning a raw green leaf into the finished product. Afternoon, enjoy High Tea and evening free to relax or explore this small town. (B, D)

Day 9: Nuwara Eliya - Bentota / Beruwala

Travel by road to Bentota / Beruwela, a small resort town in the southwestern coastal belt where the beaches boast of its dazzling combination of sun, sea and sand. Soft golden sand that feels like talcum powder under the feet, giant palm fronds rustling lightly in the tropical breeze; all in a breath stoppingly beautiful corralled bay, make your two nights at resort simply gorgeous! Enjoy and immerse yourself in the serenity of the area. The afternoon is free for you to relax and enjoy. (B, D)

Day 10: Galle Excursion

After breakfast, enjoy an excursion to Galle. This was the most ancient and important harbour of the country until the Colombo harbour was established. Galle is identified as the ‘Tarshis’ of the bible. This was captured by the Portuguese in 1587 A.D, Dutch in 1640 A.D, and British in 1796 A.D.  Most of the existing buildings dates to Dutch period. The Bastians are still using Dutch names such as Zwart, Akesloot, Aeloes etc. Famous for lace-making, Ebony carving, Gem cutting & polishing. Explore the Bazaar for local hand-crafted souvenirs. (B, D)

Day 11: Bentota / Beruwela - Colombo - Kolkata

Enjoy your leisurely breakfast before travelling back to Colombo. The tour finishes by late afternoon with a direct transfer to the International airport. Arrive at Kolkata International Airport. Please clear immigration & visa formalities, collect your baggage and proceed to the arrival lounge through the green channel if you do not have goods to be declared to customs. Day 12: Farakka 

After a leisurely breakfast, the morning is free until midday later checkout in time to be transferred to the railway station to board the express train to Farakka followed by transfer to the ship. (B, D)

Day 13: Malda

This morning cruise along a straight canal section to Jangipur, here we enjoy a full day of Gaur, near the town of Malda, or English Bazar. This quiet, deserted place was once one of India’s great cities, first under the Hindus in the 12th century, then as the Muslim capital of Eastern India from the 14th to the 16th century. There are plentiful remains of mosques, palaces and gateways and you visit many the most interesting historical sites before re-joining the ship in the evening near Jangipur. (B, L, D)

Day 14: Baranagar & Murshidabad

This morning moor at the delightful sleepy village of Baranagar with three gorgeous miniature terracotta temples to which you walk through the fields. This is rural India at its most idyllic.

After lunch, continue to Murshidabad where the Nawab’s great Hazarduari Palace dominates the waterfront. Built by an English architect in 1837, the palace hosts an extensive collection of pictures, china, weapons and other objects. Carry on visiting the great Katra Mosque and Nashipara Palace before driving out to see the Katgola Palace. Built in the classical Georgian style by rich local merchants, Katgola Palace represents the other side of the coin of the 'White Mughal' period when English and Indian cultures came close to fusion. Day 15: Murshidabad

Sail downstream a short distance then walk to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Mughul-style garden enclosing the tombs of Siraj-Ud-Daulah – the last independent Nawab of Bengal – and his family. Return to the ship and continue downstream past the old British cantonment of Berhampur to a rural mooring close to the battlefield of Plassey where, in 1757, Robert Clive, the Commander-in-Chief of British India, defeated Siraj-Ud-Daulah. You can walk through the fields to the commemorative obelisk. Cruise on to a mooring near Katwa, a market town with narrow bustling bazaars. (B, L, D)

​Day 16: Matiari

Visit the brassworking village of Matiari where you can see the whole primitive process of beating out brass water pots and other vessels. Continue through the countryside to Mayapur to visit the vast new ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple which dominates the skyline. As the headquarters of ISKCON or the Hare Krishna movement, the temple receives over a million singing and dancing devotees a year from around the world. (B, L, D)

Day 17: Kalna

Continue down to the country town of Kalna. Take cycle rickshaws to see a group of some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples, as well as the unique Shiva temple with concentric rings made up of 108 shrinelets. Sail on, leaving fields behind and arrive at the outskirts of Kolkata. Land near Bandel to visit the imposing Imambara at Hooghly. With verses from the Koran written on its walls, the Imambara is an opportunity to step back in time and relive a slice of Islamic history in Bengal. (B, L, D)

Day 18: Chandernagore

Sail downstream – past fine waterfront buildings and the old Dutch settlement at Chinsura – to land at Chandernagore, a French possession until 1950. Visit the 18th-century church and Dupleix’s House, the erstwhile Governor-General of French India, before continuing down to Barrackpore. Land and take a walk through the cantonment – past the Semaphore Tower, Government House, the Temple of Fame and Flagstaff House – to get a better understanding of India's journey to independence. Day 19: Kolkata Departure

Early this morning, cruise under the Howrah Bridge to central Kolkata. Disembark after breakfast and tour finish with direct transfer to the airport by afternoon. (B)
